Should you have a website, or is a Facebook page enough?

Is a website more than a Facebook page, or are they the same thing?

A website and a Facebook page are not the same thing, but they work best when they work together. A website is the place where you publish content, while a Facebook page is where people can interact with that content. If your business is on Facebook, it's easy to think of your page as being synonymous with your online presence—but it isn't.

You want both (or all!) of these tools at your disposal, so that you can communicate with your customers in the ways that make sense for them; however, many small business owners do not have the time or money to manage more than one online presence for their businesses.

In this day and age when new social media outlets are popping up every week, it's important to know how much time and energy you're willing to devote to building out your online presence before committing yourself too deeply into one thing over another because there will be other things that come along soon after!

Why would you want a website instead of just a Facebook page?

You can accomplish many of the same things for your business on both a website and a Facebook page. Then again, if you want to give your business an image of professionalism and stability, you will probably get more mileage out of having your own website.

Also, websites are not subject to changes made by Facebook, as they're outside their control. Websites are also more secure than Facebook pages.

While there are options available to allow anyone to build their own website, it's very easy to build something that doesn't look good, is hard to navigate or doesn't work properly in all browsers--which can give the impression that your business isn't very professional.

If you want a website with more features (including blogs and podcasts), one that works well across all browsers and devices (including smartphones and tablets) consider using a professional web designer for building and maintaining your site instead of trying to do it yourself or outsourcing it cheaply overseas--it will be worth the investment.

Websites tend to have more flexibility when it comes to what can be done with them than Facebook pages do. In addition, websites have better built-in organic search engine optimization opportunities than pages do.

The problem with relying on Facebook for your business

Sure, you want to dominate Facebook. If you're relying on Facebook alone, however, you are making a mistake.

Facebook is not a search engine. Google is the go-to place for people asking questions and looking for information, whether they're researching the next big purchase or just looking for a place to grab tacos. Facebook cannot be your website because it lacks the key ingredient: searchability. Facebook can be an essential part of your online presence, but it shouldn't be all that's out there.

There are many reasons why you should not rely solely on a Facebook page for your small business. A website can help you expand your reach and establish credibility with potential customers.

  • A Facebook page is not a website.

  • It's not searchable, accessible, or controllable by you.

  • Your brand is largely in the hands of Facebook and its ever-changing algorithms and preferences.

  • You may run into restrictions with Facebook that prevent you from even having the features you want on your page.

  • All those Likes are useless if they never convert to visits to your website, where you can actually ask them to buy something or sign up for your email list because they've decided to trust you as a force in your industry.

As I mentioned above, there are a few key reasons why not having a website could be damaging to your business. Use Social media for sharing & communicating about your brand and website.
